On Scope Relations between Quantifiers and Epistemic Modals

چکیده

is paper presents and discusses a range of counterexamples to the common view that quanti ers cannot take scope over epistemic modals. Some of the counterexamples raise problems for ‘force modi er’ theories of epistemic modals. Some of the counterexamples raise problems for Robert Stalnaker’s theory of counterfactuals, according towhich a special kind of epistemicmodalmust be able to scope over awhole counterfactual. Finally, some of the counterexamples suggest that David Lewis must countenance ‘would’ counterfactuals in which a covert ‘would’ scopes over the whole consequent of the counterfactual, including an overt ‘might.’

Distributivity and modality : where each may go , every can ’ t follow ∗

Von Fintel and Iatridou (2003) observed a striking pattern of scopal noninteraction between phrases headed by strong quantifiers like every and epistemically interpreted modal auxiliaries. Tancredi (2007) and Huitink (2008) observed that von Fintel and Iatridou’s proposed constraint, the Epistemic Containment Principle (ECP), does not apply uniformly: it does not apply to strong quantifiers hea...

“Might” Made Right

Kratzer’s picture [, , ]: • Modals are quantifiers over possible worlds. • Possibility modals are existential quantifiers, necessity modals are universal quantifiers. They are duals of each other. • Modals quantify over the worlds given by a background such as “in view of what the laws are” (i.e. the worlds compatible with what the laws are in the evaluation world). • The “ambiguity” betwe...

An inquisitive perspective on modals and quantifiers

Drawing on recent work in inquisitive semantics, this paper presents a new perspective on modals and quantifiers, which has the potential to address a number of challenges that have been raised for standard approaches to such operators. To illustrate the new perspective, we present an inquisitive take on the semantics of attitude verbs, and on quantifiers taking scope out of questions.

Review of Epistemic Modality

and so I will focus on this aspect of the volume, summarizing the remaining papers in my concluding remarks. The classical approach to modals from Kratzer treats them as existential or universal quantifiers over a contextually restricted set of possible worlds. Different flavors of modality—circumstantial, deontic, epistemic, etc.—correspond to different choices of contextually provided restric...

Epistemics with Attitude

In the Hintikkan tradition, attitude verbs are treated uniformly as universal quantifiers over possible worlds, where the sole difference between various attitudes is in the accessibility relation that determines the set of worlds they quantify over. Believe, want and say quantify respectively over worlds compatible with the beliefs, desires, claims of the attitude holder. In this paper, we dis...
